Botulinum toxin (often referred to as Botox™) has been used in medical treatments as a muscle relaxant for over a century, and has a proven safety record. Predominantly used in modern cosmetic treatments for frown lines, wrinkles and furrows, botulinum toxin, is a purified protein derived from bacteria (although no bacteria are injected during treatment).

Lines and wrinkles are often caused by facial muscles having repeatedly contracted and the botulinum toxin treatment works by softening and removing these lines – temporarily blocking the nerves to the muscles and effectively allowing the skin a period of time (normally 3 to 4 months) to rest and recover. After the treatment has worn off, further treatments can be used to maintain the effect, with repeated use actually minimising the development of future wrinkles.

Clients should see a visible improvement in frown lines within 2 to 6 days, with a follow up visit to the clinic recommended after 2 weeks, by which time the full effects of the muscle relaxant will be evident.
Products available for anti-wrinkle injections include Botox®, Bocouture® and Azzalure®.
